REC REG 1 AUG 16

August, 1916.

Sir,

In reply to your letter of July 26th (34831/1916)

enclosing copy of a telegram from the Governor of Hong

Kong relative to the proposed export of Pig Iron and

Manganese Ore to San Francisco, I am directed by the

Minister of Munitions to state, for the information of

Mr. Secretary Bonar Law, that he has no objection to

the export of the manganese ore and does not think it necessary that any particular conditions should be

imposed.

With regard to the Pig Iron, I am to say that

it has been found necessary lately to refuse an

application for the export of Scotch Foundry Pig Iron

from this country to Hong Kong, and that in these

circumstances Mr. Montagu is of opinion that it would

not be desirable that the export of the Chinese Pig Iron

should be permitted.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

C.R.V.

Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
